Two years after the first National Convention on the Elimination of Violence in Sport, the speech did not cease to be published. To condemn both old truths and very recent actions. On Wednesday, March 9, Minister Sports Delegate Roxana Maracineanu brought together various players from the world of sports, the judiciary, national education and child protection to draw up a new balance sheet.

Fabienne Bourdais, ministerial delegate on combating violence in sport, reported 610 cases of violence identified since 31 December 2021, since the cell became operational in February 2020. “We have received 30 additional reports since January 1, 2022. Suffice it to say that this issue is not left behind”, loudly underlined, Fabienne Bourdais.

To fix the problem for today, the ministry delegate stated that 107 out of 610 cases fell into the 2020-2021 sports season. Altogether, more than 70% of the files deal with acts committed in the last ten years.

In 89% of cases, the reports were of a sexual nature. In total, 54 sports federations are affected, but 12 of them intensify 68% of the work. Most of the violence took place in Turkey. “entertainment structures”although high tier is not exempt – 37 reports target high tier structures.

As with the 2021 assessment, the victims were overwhelmingly female – 79% – and minors at the time of the events (84%). On the side of the attackers, among the 655 defendants, 395 were sports trainers, 86 of whom were volunteers. “One third of the 309 paid trainers or trainees accused did not have a valid professional card, although it is compulsory”, Regret Fabienne Bourdais.

60 percent of the cases handled by the ministry unit are now closed. More than 200 investigations are ongoing. The examination of these cases led to about 300 administrative decisions by the prefects of the department. Thus, 120 emergency measures and 67 permanent bans were declared prohibiting exercise for a maximum period of six months (investigation period). Federations, on the other hand, switched to 23 permanent radiation.

As part of the first National Convention, in 2020, the Minister of Sports committed to enact the systematization of the integrity check of volunteers from January 2021. With nearly two million criminal records to be checked, the mission would be colossal.

Today, 68 federations have committed to this task, with 216,000 checks carried out with clear momentum since the beginning of 2022. This work made it possible to roll over profiles: three emergency ban measures and 17 incapacity for work (connected with a registered criminal conviction perpetrators of sexual or violent crimes in the file) have already been pronounced.
