A new step to strengthen the place of chess game in schools

The framework agreement with FFE signed in 2007 was further consolidated with the launch of Class’Echecs, and FFE will also sign a joint agreement with two public school sports federations, USEP and UNSS.

With 5 million practitioners in France, chess is indeed one of the historical disciplines that has regained popularity in recent years. The online app boom during the 2020 restrictions, coupled with the release of Le Jeu de la Dame on Netflix, had an immediate impact on the number of licensees.

In December 2021, the FFE registered 42,000 registrants, a record for this period. The discovery or rediscovery of the game of chess has become a sporting practice in clubs. The international performances of the French team also contributed to the enthusiasm of the public.

The introduction of the game of chess at school finds a special resonance as this game among the educational tools put forward on the occasion of Mathematics Week on the theme “Shape(s) in Mathematics” from March 7-14, 2022. It has become an educational tool for young people.

The game of chess, which facilitates the learning of citizenship by activating the capacity for logic, strategy, rigor and abstraction, respecting rules and others, is included as part of the TOROSSIAN-VILLANI report and as part of the Mathematics Strategy.

Applied from an early age, it contributes to the building of personality by encouraging attention, imagination, anticipation, judgment and self-confidence. It also finds its place in the context of school sports, as it constitutes a cultural element with both educational, social and public health functions and carries the values ​​of equal opportunity. Moreover, the renewed partnership is particularly relevant to students on the vocational path who face difficulties in priority education networks and at school, particularly in mathematics.

Class’Echecs program, which aims to meet 250,000 primary school children for 3 years, takes a new step. School teachers who volunteer for the program will have access to free education on the [email protected]ère platform, while 5,000 chessboards will be distributed in 500 schools from the first year of the partnership.

The free system was made possible by financial and material support from Crédit Mutuel Enseignant and Échiquier de la Réussite. USEP will provide practical continuity by organizing inter-class and inter-school meetings. A research lab will study the impact on classrooms from the first year.

The acquisition of the civil service delegation will provide the FFE with concrete tools to strengthen the actions of each sports federation in its two main axes:

  • sports performance with the federal performance project: a performance plan for the French teams of today and tomorrow;
  • Social performance through the implementation of the FFE’s national strategy covering the fight against violence in sport, sport health, inclusion, disability, international impact…

Resources provided by the Ministry Sports and the National Sports Agency will be financial, human and material for top athletes.

Actions taken pursuant to this agreement should be jointly monitored by the MENR and the representatives of the signatory federations.
