Pierre Gasly was fastest in the first tests in Bahrain

Pierre Gasly finished first on the AlphaTauri timeline in the first practice session of the new Formula 1 season, while Lewis Hamilton finished just seventh for Mercedes ahead of Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix.

Gasly led Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz’s Ferraris in the daylight heat of Sakhir in 1:34,193 while George Russell’s fellow Mercedes finished fourth and world champion Max Verstappen fifth for Red Bull.

The drivers will return to the track for the second practice session in the Bahrain evening, when track conditions better represent what the teams will face in Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race.
