History of the sports press in Tangier (1960-2022)

Memories are nothing but memories and more memories… This is how we can summarize the life of the Tangier sports press. This is called the “zamane al cemil” press.

It was a real family whose members met every Sunday at the defunct Marshane stadium. We discussed on the podium, commented on the training sessions, wrote articles, exchanged views, made reports. Everything was done professionally.

We learned a lot and progressed rapidly. The beginning of the sports press in Tangier dates back to 1960.

We talked about sports before independence, but in short news. He was not journalistic.

top three journalists

The first sports journalists in the city were three: Houcine Boustani, Mokhtar Hlimi on Radio Tangier, and Renato Piñero on “Diario España.”

The topic of sports was on the front page, and the people of Tangier became familiar with the programs and reports they followed passionately. Houcine Boustani presented “mañana del lunes” in Spanish, Mokhtar Hlimi presented “the world of sports” in Arabic, Renato Piñero wrote “la hoja del lunes” in Spanish. It took ten years to finally see a French sports press.

The first two French-speaking journalists

It was the Casablanca newspaper “Le Matin” that took the initiative to train two young journalists appointed by sports editor Daniel Pilard: Abdelmajid Bakhti and Rachid Madani, who will be doing an extended internship at the Philip stadium in Casablanca.

At the same time, the Arabic sports press appeared with two major reporters: Mohamed Gharbi in Radio Tangier and Abdeslam Chaâbaoui in the newspaper “Al Alam”.

A few years later, Moroccan sports journalists had to organize themselves to form their first association, headquartered in Rabat under the chairmanship of Abdelatif Gharbi and supported by Kamal Lahlou, a renowned general secretary who is now Vice President. National Committee, Moroccan Olympiad.

In 1975, only four journalists covered the sports activities of Abdelmajid Bakhti, Mohamed Gharbi, Abdeslam Chaabaoui and Rachid Madani in a city as important as Tangier, with a population of 750,000.

1985: the year of the sports press

The year 1985 was the year in which a series of young Arabic sports journalists, Mohamed Saïdi, Hassan Boudraâ, Farid Dahrouch, led by the senior men of the Arabic-speaking pen Abdelouahid Chabou, Mohamed Bouassid, Larbi Zougari, Bachir Mesri, Mohamed were blessed. Sadhi and French-speaking Nouredine Filali and Driss Ghazi. With Boukili becoming the head of regional RTM, Mohammed Samadi took his place to make one of the best reporters, Abdelmajid Bakhti, Ahmed Hdidech’s collaborator forget.

Then we can talk about another phase marked by the arrival of Mustafa Sbaï in Matin du Sahara, followed by Mohamed Dfouf and Abdelmajid Ouriaghli.

A good school of sports media followed with the opening of Medi 1 Radio, represented first by another Mustafa Sbaï, then by Jalal Bouzrara. Now, this school is powered by the same Jalal Bouzrara, Fouad Hanaoui and Abdellah Jaafari on Medi 1 TV.

It is also important to mention a new so-called electronic sports press in which several colleagues are active: Mohamed Senkor, Rachid HDifi, Hicham Jaidi, Bachir Laâjjouk, but not forgetting veteran Achkouk.

As for the radio of private channels, we can say that she is with Abelkhalak Chabou, Fouad Sediki and Mohamed Azoul, but without forgetting Laila Bedyouch, the first female symbolic figure on the microphone of the sport in the north.

At MAP, Hicham Moussaoui joined the Tangier sports press family.

Huge respect for dead journalists

This portrait is a unique opportunity to commemorate the posthumous seven sports reporters Abdelmajid Bakhti, Mohamed Gharbi, Abdelouahid Chabou, Driss Ghazi, Mohamed Dfouf, Abdelmajid Ouriaghli and Mustafa Sbaï, who disappeared from the radio. God Yerhamhum…
