Joe Root resigned as England captain, saying his decision was the hardest of his career.

Joe Root resigns as England Test captain.

The 31-year-old, who replaced Sir Alastair Cook as captain in 2017, finishes his tenure with the most appearances (64) and wins as England men’s Test captain (27).

Root’s decision follows England’s streak of just one win in the last 17 Test matches that stretched back to February 2021 and ended with a series of defeats to the West Indies last month.

“After returning from a tour of the Caribbean and giving it time to think, I have decided to leave the England Men’s Test captaincy,” Root said in a statement. Said.

“It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my career, but after talking to my family and loved ones, I know the time has come.

“I am extremely proud to have captained my country and will look back on the last five years with great pride. It has been an honor to do the job and be the custodian of what has been the pinnacle of English cricket.

I loved leading my country but lately I realized how much it cost me and the effect it had on me outside of the game.

“I am very happy to continue to represent the Three Lions and to produce performances that will enable the team to succeed. I look forward to helping the next captain, my teammates and the coaches as much as I can. »

Root has had many successes during his time as captain, including a 4-1 home win over India in 2018 and away victories against South Africa and Sri Lanka.

The Yorkshire batsman is currently England’s second all-time top scorer after Cook, while Root’s 14 centuries as captain helped him reach the record 5,295 runs for an England captain.

Root’s tenure has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused England to turn players over fears about the mental health impact of playing the playoffs while living in biologically safe bubbles.

ECB CEO Tom Harrison said: “Joe has been an outstanding role model throughout his tenure, balancing the demands of Test captaincy and continuing to shine brightly with his own personal performances. He led by example and this resulted in more Test wins than any other. More from England captains, a string of famous home and away wins.

“Joe’s leadership qualities, how he has led the team through some of the toughest and most uncertain times we’ve seen, playing during the pandemic around the world, and that shows how much he means a lot as a leader and as a person.

“I know that anyone who has played or worked under Joe will speak of his integrity and humility as a person as well as his determination and example as a leader.”
