Shooting, archery and wrestling not covered by the 2026 Commonwealth Games – Reuters

Victoria will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with regional centers in the Australian state hosting most of the events departing from the traditional single host city model. The Games will be held in March 2026 in several cities and regional centers, each with its own athlete’s village, including Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced on Tuesday that the opening ceremony will take place at the iconic 100,000 capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground. The announcement follows a period of special dialogue between CGF, Commonwealth Games Australia (CGAus) and Victoria.

A starting roster of 16 sports has been proposed for the games, including Twenty20 cricket, with more sports to be added later this year. However, the first list does not include disciplines such as shooting and wrestling, which are sports where India has performed well in previous editions of the sports craze. Archery is not on the list either.

Kunwar Sultan Singh, Secretary General of the National Rifle Association of India, described the KGF’s decision as lacking “logic or reasoning”.

“It is discouraging, shocking and utterly illogical to refuse to make a film for the second year in a row from CWG. It’s unfair that shooters from all over the world are preparing for such an important multi-sport event. I request the Government of India and the AIO to forward the matter to the relevant authorities of KGF so that the sport can be included in the Victorian 2026 Games programme,” Singh told TOI.

“A concerted effort from the government and the IOA is needed to reverse this decision. United World Wrestling must do something to ensure wrestling regains its deserved place on the CWG. TOI quoted an official from the Wrestling Federation of India.

Indian wrestlers have won 12 medals, five of which are gold, while the country’s shooters have won 16 medals, seven of which are gold. As for archery, which has only appeared in two editions of the CWG, the last one was in 2010 in New Delhi, India, where it won eight medals, including three gold medals.

Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews said: “It is a great honor that Victoria has been selected as the host site for the 2026 Commonwealth Games – we look forward to welcoming the world to our state. “The Commonwealth Games in Greater Victoria are great for business, hospitality and our economy. Australia has hosted the Commonwealth Games five times; Victoria hosted the Melbourne Games in 2006; It is widely considered one of the most successful releases of the event in history.

The country has also hosted games in Sydney in 1938, Perth in 1962, Brisbane in 1982 and most recently the Gold Coast in 2018. Victoria also hosted the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo in 2004. CGF President Dame Louise Martin said: “The Commonwealth Games Federation is absolutely delighted to award the 2026 Commonwealth Games to Victoria.

Commonwealth Games Australia and the Victorian Government have set a bold and innovative vision to host our big multi-sport event. We believe we have found the perfect partner for the next leg of our journey in Victoria. »

In line with the new “strategic roadmap” announced at the CGF’s 2021 General Assembly on October 11, track and field and swimming will be the CWG’s only mandatory sports from the 2026 edition, giving host cities greater freedom to include their own disciplines. choice in an offer. Essential list of 22 sports. The recommended core list, after review by the Commonwealth Games Federation, includes shooting, wrestling, and archery. Disciplines that were previously considered optional, such as T20 cricket, beach volleyball, and 3×3 basketball, were also included in the proposed core sports list.

The 2026 Games will be the 23rd edition of the great multi-sport competition that began in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. Victoria is one of the world’s leading major events and tourism destinations. The state has a strong history of hosting top sporting events including the Australian Open tennis grand slam, the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Melbourne Cup. The state also regularly hosts elite competitions in cricket, golf and Australian football.
